It is now May 18, 2020. While parts of the country is opening up, Manhattan is still shelter in. We are now in week 8. It hasn't been easy. But for me, one of the upsides to being sheltered in during Covid-19 is having a lot of time read and write. So, I've taken this opportunity to share my readings with you through our Little Moony Book Club, in which I will read and recommend one book per week (maybe more).
This week's feature is MAYBE, an extraordinary book by Kobi Yamada, illustrated by Gabriella Barouch. Kobi is a New York Times best-selling author who wrote What Do You Do With An Idea (also an incredible book).
Maybe was published last year and I have to say, the writing and the illustrations are on par with one another. Often, I find children's books to have incredible visuals but the writing is lacking somehow. Maybe, which contains over 40 pages, is filled with stunning, realistic and magical illustrations while the writing is sensitive, warm and intelligent. The book, which features a girl and her adorable flying pig, is about the unbound potential in all of us. It reminds us that each person is unique and that we all have incredible potential, no matter the path we take and how hard the journey may be. It is a story about each of us for everything that we will do and everything we could become. And Maybe we will exceed wildest dreams.
"You are the only you there ever has been or ever will be. You are unique. Just the odds of you being here at this exact place and this exact time are so great and so rare that they will never happen again".
The message is simple yet profound and inspirational. It is a theme that is generally featured in adult books, but Kobi did such a wonderful job of bringing it to a children's book. Maybe should be a part every child's library. It makes for an inspiring and timeless gift that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. Quite frankly, Maybe is entirely appropriate for adults too, especially those who love beautiful art.
